Lecturer's Profile:

Markus Henke (Member IEEE) is full professor for Electrical Drive Systems at Technische Universität Braunschweig in Germany. He received his Dr.-Ing. in 2002 in the field of electrical machine design and control engineering from the University of Paderborn. In 2003, he joined Volkswagen Group Research in Wolfsburg and became head of the research department for electrical drives. Since 2012 he is the managing director of the Institute for Electrical Machines, Traction and Drives (IMAB). His research work is based on the modelling, design and construction of innovative electrical machines for automotive and aviation applications.

Lecture Content Overview:

The lecture deals with current research work on electric drives and energy technology at the TU Braunschweig. In the field of automotive traction and auxiliary drives, the last decades have seen numerous new developments in electric machine design and in power electronic applications.These have been brought about in particular by the challenging boundary conditions in the automobile section and by new material developments which applies to insulation materials as well as hard and soft magnetic materials. High circumferential speed and high temperature levels also place increasing demands on mechanical behaviour, service life and especially cooling of electrical machines.

Based on this development, numerous research projects are investigating possibilities for the electrification of powertrains in aviation. In the lecture, current challenges and issues in these strongly interdisciplinary subject areas will be presented and discussed.
